Brand new opportunities

This week, our Year 6 class were invited to the construction site of the brand-new £12m leisure centre in Mablethorpe.

Global construction company, ISG are building a new 3,000m² hub which will be built on the site of the current Station Sports Centre in Mablethorpe to increase and improve the opportunities for leisure and learning in the town.

The pupils prepared to visit the site but watching a presentation on construction site safety and discussed the different jobs that are available on a building site.

They then discussed as a group the types of skills you need to work on a similar site. The children were surprised to realise that they use similar skills at school every day, such as problem solving, teamwork and communication.

They were shown various machinery used on site, which they learnt is called ‘plant’. They then helped one another to identify these kinds of machinery on site, spotting vehicles such as cherry pickers, scissor lifts and forklifts.

Year 6 then geared up to visit the building site by wearing hard hats, hi vis vests, suitable footwear, gloves and protective glasses.

Project Manager Adam Walker took the students on a tour of the site and showed them where the new gym, fitness studio and play areas and cafe would be.

He then took them to stand in the brand new 25 metre four-lane swimming pool!

The development will also provide a digital inclusion learning centre, a commercial space for meeting and recreational facilities, including an adventure play area.

The aim of the visits is to show pupils more about the industry and allow them the opportunity to get up close to a construction site and understand a little more about what goes into building such a big project.

They will visit the building site on two more occasions in the future to see how the site changes and develops. They have been tasked with identifying these changes on their next visit.

ISG have asked the students to make notes of what they see on these visits and take part in putting together a newsletter for when the site is finished to advise the surrounding areas about what is on offer and the work that has gone into the project.

It is hoped that the children from Theddlethorpe Academy will mark the building with their initials, which will remain there for as long as the building stand and there are also plans to bury a time capsule, which will be revealed in 30-40 years’ time.
