Pupils Put Some Energy Into Outdoor Learning

Education Leader Richard Dawson, from The Classroom In The Woods, shows Theddlethorpe Academy pupil Kye Henderson how to make a water wheel.

Outdoor learning at The Classroom In The Woods, at Ashby cum Fenby, gave Theddlethorpe Academy Year 5 and 6 children a chance to hear all about hydro electricity and make their own water wheels.

With the help of Education Leader Richard Dawson, the pupils enhanced their project 'Light Up My Life' by discussing wind and solar power and how water can be used to produce energy.

The pupils were then put into groups to make a water wheel out of sticks, wood and string. Afterwards, they were taken down to the chalk stream (one of just 220 chalk streams in the world) to see if their wheels could spin in the current.

"It was a fabulous day and the children learned a lot about energy from being outside and working with nature," said Theddlethorpe Academy Principal, Rebecca Scott.
