Years 5 & 6

We have included this brief guide, to accompany the packs taken home by the pupils recently.

Your child has been provided with a set of activities in their home-learning packs. These activities include reading comprehension packs that develop a range of reading skills, maths revision booklets and some Theme activities all about the rainforests of the world. In addition to these packs, Year 6 children have also been provided with additional SATs practise papers to continue to revise the key concepts that they will be tested on later in the year. Year 6 children must continue to follow their revision schedule when completing their SATs revision guides.

Theme - The Wilds of South America.

During our Theme lessons, the children have been learning about rainforests. As part of this topic they have been learning about the plants and animals that live in a rainforest and the threats that these habitats face. In Geography, they have located the different rainforests of the world on maps and identified key features such as the four layers of the rainforest.

As part of their home-learning your child could create a poster, fact file, leaflet or PowerPoint presentation all about the tropical rainforests of the world. They can choose to focus on a particular plant or animal or write about a wider range of things such as food, animals and their habitats, tribes etc. If computer access is an issue, then your child can prepare a poster or booklet using materials of their choice.

We continue to work on all times tables facts up to 12 x 12 and the corresponding divisions. Please encourage your child to revise these regularly and access Times tables Rockstars if possible. They can also access Manga High which will allow them to practise a wider range of maths skills. Log-in details will be available for both programs.

Please encourage your child to continue reading throughout the week. These reads will still need to be recorded in their reading records. The current class reading book is Holes by Louis Sachar. If your child has access to a copy then please encourage them to continue reading this story. A set of spellings will be sent home. Please encourage your child to practise these daily. To consolidate their understanding of word meanings they could research the meaning of these words and then use them in their own sentences. Encourage the correct use of punctuation whenever your child is writing.
